Back pain in the lower back or low back pain is a common concern, affecting up to 90% of Americans at some point in their lifetime. Up to 50% will have more than one episode. Low back pain is not a specific disease. Rather, it is a symptom that may occur from a variety of different processes. In up to 85% of people with low back pain, despite a thorough medical examination, no specific cause of the pain can be identified. * Low back pain is second only to the common cold as a cause of lost days at work. It is also one of the most common reasons to visit a doctor’s office or a hospital’s emergency department. * For 90% of people, even those with nerve root irritation, their symptoms will improve within 2 months, no matter what treatment is used-even if no treatment is given. * Doctors usually refer to back pain as acute if it has been present for less than a month and chronic if it lasts for a longer period of time Many things can cause low back injuries–muscle strain or spasm, sprains of ligaments (which attach bone to bone), joint problems or a “slipped disk.” The most common cause is using your back muscles in activities you’re not used to, like lifting heavy furniture or doing yard work. A slipped disk (also called a herniated disk) happens when a disk between the bones of the spine bulges and presses on nerves. This is often caused by twisting …

Treatment of back pain begins by knowing its cause. It can start from wrong sleeping position, bad posture or injury from playing sports. Depending on how severe the pain is, treating back pain can take at least a week and may last for up to a month. If you’re experiencing back pain most of the time, here are the things you might consider doing.

If you often wake up with a tremendous pain in the back, better change your bed mattress. It’s probably softer than how it should be. Your mattress should be firm enough to position your spine correctly while sleeping. You see, a comfortable mattress is not just about softness, especially if you have a back problem. Look for a mattress that is unyielding but still comfortable to sleep in.

Another thing you can do is to check your weight. Being overweight is one of the leading causes of back pain.

This is because your upper body’s weight has become too heavy for your lower body to support, thus straining your back. Exercise is the best way to address this. You can lose weight and at the same time help strengthen your muscles on the knees, ankles, and hips.

A popular way of relieving back pain is heat therapy. With heat therapy, blood flow is increased and spasms are reduced. Common types of heat therapy used are heat wraps and hot baths. This is very relaxing and is proven effective to heal back pains. Avoid getting in cold places because this will increase the pain all the more. That’s why it’s common for people with scoliosis to be attacked by severe back pains during cold seasons.

Massage is another common treatment for back pains. You can go to a professional massage therapist for a whole body massage or a chair massage. This will help you relax and loosen up those tight back muscles. Also, you may include stretching to your daily routine as this may help prevent muscle strain before doing any exercise or heavy work.

Some back pains are not that serious and can be dealt with by over the counter painkillers and anti-inflammatory medicines. There are some cases however, like serious back injuries and scoliosis that needs professional medical attention or surgery.

The pain can be divided into neck pain, upper back pain, back pain or tailbone pain. You can have a sudden onset or can be a chronic pain but may be constant or intermittent, stay in one place or radiate to other areas.

It may be a dull ache or a sharp or piercing sensation or burning. The pain may radiate to the arm and hand) in the upper or lower back, (and may radiate to the leg or foot), and may include symptoms other than pain, such as weakness, numbness or tingling.

Back pain is one of the most frequent complaints of mankind. In the U.S., acute low back pain (also called lumbago) is the fifth most common reason for doctor visits. Nearly nine out of ten adults experience back pain at some point in their life, and five out of ten working adults have back pain every year.

Causes of low back pain

Back pain is a symptom.

The most common causes of back pain means a disease or injury to muscles, bones and / or nerves of the spine. Pain arises from abnormalities of the organs inside the abdomen, pelvis or chest, can also be felt in the back. This is called referred pain.

Many conditions in the abdomen, such as appendicitis, aneurysms, kidney disease, kidney infection, bladder infections, pelvic infections and ovarian disorders, among others, can cause back pain. A normal pregnancy can cause back pain in many forms, including stretching ligaments in the pelvis, which irritates the nerves, and low back strain. Your doctor will take this into account when assessing pain.

Symptoms

In the U.S., back pain is one of the most common conditions and one of the leading causes of doctor visits. In fact, at least four out of five adults experience at some point in their lives.

Ironically, the intensity of pain is often related to the extent of physical damage. For example, low back spasms a simple back strain can cause terrible lower back pain can make it difficult to walk or even stand, whereas a large herniated disc or completely degenerate disc can actually be totally painless.

Home Remedies

Ice Packs: Apply ice packs immediately after back strain or injury. Reduces inflammation and helps numb the pain. To prepare a cold pack, a pack of a few crushed ice cubes in a plastic bag. Cover the bag with a towel, and apply it to the back for about 15-20 minutes. After 30 minutes, repeat the process.

Epsom salts: These salts to reduce swelling and relieve back pain. Two cups of salt should be mixed in water in the bathtub and the patient should soak it for about 30 minutes.

Ginger and honey contains anti-inflammatory compounds and has mild effects similar to aspirin. Take 1 to 2 inches fresh ginger root and cut into slices. Place slices 1 quart of boiling water. Cover and cook over low heat, simmer 30 minutes. Cool is within 30 minutes. Strain the solution and mix a little honey in it and drink.

Arthcare is herbal formula for arthritis, which not only gives a sure relief in rheumatic arthritis but also strengthens bone tissue, skeletal and neuromuscular systems, giving a comfortable movement of joints and muscles. It is a powerful antioxidant and increases energy levels. Arthcare penetrates the body tissue faster than any other ointment because of its strong anti-inflammatory action.

Most people who suffer from lower back pain have this misconception that they need plenty of rest and refrain from activity for some time. In fact resting, especially on bed, is not desirable. If you do not experience any other serious medical conditions, other than back pain, then you should stay active.

You should be able to start exercising when you no longer feel any acute pain. Lower back pain exercises will help you to recover and also prevent from future back pain. Right types of exercises will:

Improve your posture
Improve flexibility and strengthen your back
Reduce weight
Prevent falls

A complete Lower Back Pain Exercises program includes:

Low impact aerobic activity such as swimming, walking and bicycling to improve blood flow and help speed up recovery and maintain your health.
Strengthening exercises for your back, stomach, and leg muscles.
Stretching exercises to condition your muscles and supporting tissues to be more flexible
Yoga, Pilates and Tai Chi combines low-impact movement and meditation. These are very helpful in preventing recurrences of lower back pain as they are designed to achieve a physical and mental balance.

Exercises for Lower Back Pain

Partial crunches strengthen the abdominal muscles

Lay your back on the floor with knees bent and shoulders raised slightly.

Exhale as you raise your shoulders, and inhale on the way down. Do this slowly 8 – 10 times with the arms across the chest or hands behind your neck. Do not pull your neck up with your arms. Gradually increase the number of repetitions as you get physically stronger. This exercise strengthens your back and stomach.
Pelvic Tilts

Lie on your back, bend your knees, and keep your feet flat on the floor.

Press your lower back into the floor. Tighten your buttocks muscles.

Hold for five second while inhaling and out smoothly while exhaling. When you are comfortable with this exercise, hold your breath for 10 seconds and put your feet farther away from your body.

Wall Sits

Stand with your back against a wall with your feet apart at shoulder width and about one foot from the wall. Slide your back down slowly until your thighs are parallel to the ground.

Your back must be against the wall at all times. Hold the position for 20 to 30 seconds and then slide your back up the wall. Repeat this process 5 to 8 times, depending on your fitness level. Increase your hold time by 5 to 10 seconds as you are more comfortable.

Assisted Hamstring Stretches

Use a rope, belt or a piece of towel to assist you in this exercise. Lie on your back with legs extended. Raise the leg that is wrapped with the towel into the air and straighten the knee. Pull the towel so that your toes bend towards your face. If you do not feel the stretch on your hamstring, pull harder and raise your leg higher. Hold for about 10 to 15 seconds. Repeat 3 times for each leg.

Press-up Back Extension

Lie on your stomach with your forearms supporting your body. Push your hands downwards to raise your shoulders. Relax your stomach and allow your back to arch slightly. Make sure your hips and pelvis remain on the floor. Hold for 10 to 20 seconds, and then relax. Repeat 3 times.

Knee to Chest

Lie on your back with knees bent and feet flat on the floor. Gently bring one knee up to your chest until you feel the stretch in your lower back. Keep the other foot either flat on the floor or extended. Hold for 10 to 20 seconds. Switch leg and repeat the process a few times.

Bridging

Lie on your back with knees bent and your feet either flat or heels on the floor. Tighten your abdominal muscles and squeeze your buttocks. Raise your hips off the floor until your shoulders, hips and knees are in a straight line. Hold for 10 seconds and then slowly lower your hips to the floor and relax. Repeat about 10 times. Use your hands to balance your body and avoid pressing downwards to help with the lift. Use only your shoulders and feet for the downward force.

Bird Dog

Kneel on the floor with both hands firmly placed apart about shoulder-width. Tighten your abdominal muscles, lift and extend one hand and the opposite leg while balancing on the other hand and knee. Hold for 10 seconds then return to hands and knees on ground position. Repeat using the other hand and leg. Do 5 repeats on alternate hands and knees.

9. Cat and camel

Kneel down on all fours and keep your head straight so that you are staring at the floor. Exhale and slowly turn your face toward the ceiling while allowing your lower back to “sag” slowly into an arch. Do not force it down. Inhale and then arch your back in the opposite direction by contracting your lower abdominal muscles as you lower the top of your head toward the floor. All motion should be initiated and controlled by your lower back. Repeat three times in each direction.

Hip Roll

Lie flat on your back with your knees bent and your feet flat on the floor. Fold your hands across your chest or flat on the floor at your sides.Roll your knees to the left until they touch the floor, without moving your upper body. Hold for 3 seconds.

Return to starting position and do the same movement to your right this time. Do about 10-15 reps for each side.

Select five exercises to do per session and the other 5 the next. Rotate them on subsequent days. All the exercises should be done on a firm but soft surface, like a yoga mat or carpet. If you feel any pain, stop immediately.

A physiotherapist can help you to decide when and what stretching and strengthening exercises are appropriate and how to do them.

You should refrain from participating in these activities during recovery:

Golf
Contact sports
Racquet sports
Jogging
Dancing
Weight lifting
Sit-ups
Toe touches while standing
Leg Lifts (Lifting both legs while lying on your back).

Ask your doctor or physical therapist whether there are additional exercises that will work best for you.

Repetition of the lower back pain exercises will help you increase flexibility, build endurance, and strengthen specific muscles to support your spine. These exercises will expedite your return to normal work and social activities. The positive benefits of exercise not only improve strength and flexibility but also change and enhance your attitudes toward your disability and pain.

Back pain may be a symptom of a variety of problems in the muscles, tendons, ligaments, bones or an underlying organ. The many contributors of back pain may be one or several conditions such as; arthritis, osteoporosis, rheumatism, infection and fever, tumor, weak stomach muscles, peptic ulcer, emotional stress, female problems, prostate problems, slipped or ruptured disk, abnormal curvature of the spine, bone disease and even constipation and disorders of the urinary system.

However, the leading cause of back pain is simple muscle strain or sprain. Even though the symptoms may come on suddenly and can be extremely painful, this is actually a problem that develops over a long period of time.

Muscle strain or sprain results from excessive or improper physical exertion, incorrect lifting, straining, poor posture, sleeping on soft beds and calcium deficiency.

Other factors responsible for back pain include flat feet, improper footwear, unequal leg length and obesity.

Backache prevention includes exercise, good posture, proper lifting, avoiding unnecessary physical strain or emotional stress and good nutrition.

Good nutrition helps prevent and correct many back problems. Certain nutrients are essential for maintaining the health of your back. Taking individual nutritional supplements in addition to a daily multivitamin-mineral supplement may provide you relief.

Helpful Supplements:

Calcium and magnesium and vitamin D
Calcium is needed for strong bones. For proper absorption use a mixture of 3 different forms: calcium asporotate, calcium carbonate and calcium chelate. Calcium supplements are more effective when taken in smaller doses spread throughout the day and before bedtime. Taken at night it will promote a sound sleep. Take 1,500 to 2,000 milligrams daily.
Magnesium works with calcium. Use the chelate form. Take 700 to 1,000 milligrams daily.
Vitamin D aids in the absorption of calcium and magnesium. Take 400 IU daily.

Vitamin A and natural beta carotene and vitamin Etaken together supply a balance of nutrients important in formation and metabolism of bone and connective tissue and needed for healing. Take 15,000 IU vitamin A daily (if you are pregnant, do not exceed 10,000 IU daily). Take 15,000 IU of natural beta carotene daily and 400 to 800 IU daily of vitamin E.

Silicaimproves calcium uptake. Take as directed on the label.

Vitamin B12aids in calcium absorption and digestion. Use the sublingual form. Take 2,000 milligrams daily.

Vitamin C with bioflavonoidsis essential for formation of collagen, which holds the tissues together, for repair of tissues and relieves tension in the back area. Take 3,000 to 10,000 milligrams daily.

Zinc plus copper
Zinc is required for protein synthesis and collagen formation; in addition, it promotes immune system health. Take 50 milligrams daily. Do not exceed a total of 100 milligrams daily from all supplements.
Copper works in balance with zinc and vitamin C to form elastin and is needed for healthy nerves. Take 3 milligrams daily.

Boronimproves calcium uptake. Take this supplement only until healed, unless you are over the age of 50. Take no more than 3 milligrams daily.

Manganeseaids in healing cartilage and tissue in the neck and back. Use in the form of manganese gluconate. Take 2 to 5 milligrams daily. Take separately from calcium.

Vitamin B complexis needed to repair and to relieve stress in the back muscles. Take a high stress formula high in vitamin B6 and vitamin B12. Take as directed on label.

L-Proline and vitamin B6 and vitamin C
L-Proline is an amino acid that helps heal cartilage and strengthens muscles and tissues. Take 500 milligrams daily on an empty stomach with water or juice, do not take with milk. Take with 50 milligrams of vitamin B6 and 100 milligrams of vitamin C for best absorption.

Essential fatty acidsare needed for repair and flexibility of muscles. Flax seed oil is a good source. Take as directed on label with meals.

Proteinis necessary for firm supporting tissue; but, animal sources will contain uric acid and are best avoided, at least until healed. Other sources are soy and combinations of grains and legumes.

DL-Phenylalanineor DLPA (amino acid) helps to alleviate pain. Take as directed on label. CAUTION: Do not take this supplement if you are pregnant, suffer from anxiety attacks, diabetes, high blood pressure, phenylketonuria (PKU) or preexisting pigmented melanoma, a type of skin cancer.

Herbal remedies that can be taken in the form of capsule, extract or tea.

Some of the best herbs used for their nerve pain relieving actions include: St. John’s Wort, jamacian dogwood, prickly ash, sweet clover and stinging nettle.

Some of the best herbs used to prevent or relax muscle spasms (antispasmodic) include: black cohosh, dong quai, hops, kava kava, lobelia, mullein, passion flower, red raspberry, rosemary, skullcap, thyme, valerian root and wild yam.

Some of the best herbs used for their anti-inflammatory actions include: angelica, astragalus, black cohosh, dong quai, gotu kola, horsetail, meadowsweet, mullein and stinging nettle.

Solomon’s Seal and mullein both may restore proper lubrication to the joints.

Horsetail is a good source of silica, which is necessary for connective tissue and bones.

Other herbs recommended for back pain include; alfalfa, burdock, oat straw, slippery elm and white willow bark.

Herbal supplements should only be used in amounts typically recommended for medicinal purposes and you should always consult with a health professional first, especially if you are pregnant, nursing or taking prescription medications.

Heres a simple exercise that will not take much of your time: Stand while facing a wall with your feet apart by a hip width. Your toes should be partly turned in and around 2 feet out from the wall. Raise your hands apart by shoulder width while keeping your fingers splayed. Inhale and exhale. While you breathe out, pull your knee caps and turn your legs in without moving your feet. Then lock your arms and begin to push your chest to the wall.

To intensify this exercise, roll your shoulders back and down and then try taking your throat to the wall. Use your breath to make the exercise easier.

Even if you do not do yoga exercises, it pays to have a yoga mat at home. Most therapy exercises for chronic lower back pain are performed on the floor, and yoga mats are necessary to provide a stable and non-slippery surface for the exercises.

Yoga is recommended to prevent and cure back pain. It is helpful because it involves various types of postures to strengthen and stretch all the major muscle groups in the body. Thus, yoga is a savior for many people suffering from back pain.

Yoga keeps the muscles moving freely and balanced as well as extends and decompresses limited regions of tightness. By doing so, yoga helps prevent back pain. Sitting for long hours can lead to contraction and compression of the spine. Especially for those who work in offices, the back bend poses in yoga can counter the hunching position over the computer all day.

Among the causes of back pain are weak back and abdominal muscles as well as poor posture. The postures used in yoga can make the muscles stronger and stretch the tight muscles, thus preventing back pain.

However, if you have pre-existing back pain and find it hard to move a lot, most yoga postures may be too hard for you to do. So it is important to consult a yoga therapist to ask for therapeutic exercises that can help you. A lot of yoga videos and books contain instructions on gentle exercises that are tailored for people suffering from chronic back pain.

“Do you suffer from back pains that occur frequently? It is actually a condition experienced by millions of people all around the world. Does it have a real cure? The answers are a bit controversial. Most doctors prescribe medications when patients seek their advice regarding their back pain. What sufferers from back pain rarely know or are rather ignorant about is that medicines that are given as a back pain remedy are not good for long term results. It will just make the pain go away for a few days. How do you then react to this regular pain?

You may have heard the phrase prevention is better than cure. This is something all back pain sufferers should always keep in mind. Here, it could also be caused by the daily activities you are involved in. Youve got a problem at hand and youneed to find a solution. There are sveral types of natural remedies available that will be equally effective in providing back pain relief.

Back pain remedy can start from your home front itself. The reason for your pain could be the mattress you sleep on. Each person gets around 7 to 8 hours of sleep on average. If you sleep on a mattress that is too hard, this will affect your back. Switch to a new mattress that is firm enough to sustain your back muscles. It will give you the added support when you sleep.

Another reason for your back pain could be how you carry your purse or the book bags. A back pain remedy to this would be to make sure the book bag straps are put on to both shoulders instead of one. This will even out the heavy load on to both shoulders. Carrying a fanny pack instead of a purse also could be ideal as a back pain remedy.

Maintaining a good posture is also of utmost importance. This means you should abstain from slouching and always sit straight. Proper posture is a great back pain remedy for this purpose.

Another easy back pain remedy could be by getting enough exercise. This will tone up your back muscles as well as the whole body. However, if you already suffer from chronic back pain, it is advisable to wait until the back pain is partly healed before beginning on any exercises.”

Sedentary living habits, hazardous work patterns and psychological conditions associated with emotional stress, which bring about spasm of the muscles, cause back pain.
In most cases of back pain, the pain is usually felt either in the middle of the back or lower down.

It may spread to both sides of the waist and the hips. In a condition of acute pain, the patient is unable to move and is bedridden.

Causes of Back Pain

Here is a look at a few common causes of back pain:

Osteoarthritis: This is usually caused by wear and tear on joints. The adult back usually has 24 vertebrae, which are joints in and of themselves. As these joints wear out, pain occurs. As long as the spinal cord is safe and the pain is not too intense, this is usually treated with anti-inflammatory medications. Sometimes, over the counter arthritis rubs are recommended.

Rheumatoid Arthritis: Like osteoarthritis, this involves destruction of the joints. However, in this case, this is caused by the immune system attacking healthy cells in the vertebrae, thus destroying them. Medications for this problem may be different, and when looking at home remedies, it is important to make sure there are no interactions between them, and that they do not make the condition worse.

Prostate Problems: Back pain is one sign of problems with the prostate. It is very important to make sure this is not the problem, as it could be BPH (benign prostate hyperplasia) or prostate cancer. When caught early enough prostate cancer may be treatable.

Symptoms of back pain:

1. Pain in the lower region of the back; may be severe and recurring often.

2. Numbness, tingling, or a shooting pain in your legs or buttocks, often on one side only.

3. Pain made worse by coughing, sneezing or twisting

4. Bladder or bowel control trouble.

5. Numbness around the groin or rectal area.

Home remedies for back pain

Following are some of the home remedies for lower back pain:

1. When standing for a prolonged period in one position raise your one foot on a platform or stool.

2. While sitting keep a cushion in the hollow of your back if your chair has a poor back support.

3. When you are sleeping always sleep on a firm mattress

4. To get a good relief from the back pain, sleep lying on your back or on your side putting one knee slightly bent.

5. Change the activities that give you a severe pain. Do not sit /stand in one position and change your position occasionally.

6. Lift any heavy loads in a proper way that is by keeping your knees bent and your back straight. Holds the load close to your body and while lifting the load straighten your knees.

7. Gently massage the painful area or put a hot towel on the aching area .If necessary take the help of medication to reduce the pain.

8. Do regular exercises to strengthen abdominal and back muscle

Diet for Back Pain

Diet for people suffering from backache should have:

1. Salad: Salad of raw vegetables: cabbage, carrot, cucumber, lettuce, radish and tomato

2. Avoid Banana: Have lot of fruits except banana

3. Avoid fatty Foods: Avoid fatty, fried and spicy foods.

4. Avoid Smoking: Consumption of smoking or tobacco in any form should be avoided.
